Stubborn, Arrogant, and Wrong

The title of this post describes three traits most people normally try to avoid.

Exhibiting any one of them is annoying, but it can happen to the best of us. We're human, after all. Exhibiting any two is worse, but even then, you can usually find some way to deal:

  • If someone is stubborn and arrogant, but usually right, then they might be a difficult person to be around... but I usually afford such people at least a measure of respect. Life is filled with many such people who have made their mark on the world; in at least some cases, such people have made it better in some way.
  • If someone is arrogant and wrong, they're probably an exceedingly unpleasant unperson to be around... but if they are sufficiently open-minded and willing to change their opinions upon being shown the error of their ways, well... there's a ray of hope in there yet.
  • If someone is stubborn and wrong, well, that's annoying—but if they are modest and self-effacing about it, then at least you don't feel like punching them in the face every time you talk to them.
Recently, I have encountered a person in my life who conspicuously exhibits all three traits, in spades. I haven't quite been able to figure out where it comes from—maybe it's some deep-seated insecurity, ignorance, or just a lack of common sense. Whatever. Unfortunately, I have to deal with this person far, far more often than I'd like. As a result, I am getting a great deal of practice in the mystical art of self-restraint, and thus somehow resisting the urge to commit what would otherwise be a karmically beautiful random act of, say, brick throwing.

As far as remedies go, the only ones that come to mind are ones that very few people would consider socially acceptable. That, and I hear Tasers and pepper spray are evidently illegal in Sweden.

Sooooooo... does anyone have any suggestions?
